According to the wonderful big Atlas of Birds of Moscow City and Moscow Region (2006, Pensoft, Sofia/Moscow), снегирь (Bullfinch) is a breeding bird rare in Moscow City and uncommon in Moscow Region. Their map shows only 4 nesting sites known in Moscow city (of course that depends on observers, they don't have total information), none of them in the center. I've never seen one in Strogino, but I've seen them a number of times at our dacha. You took a great picture! I'm jealous! Congratulations! The most exciting birds I've seen in our дворе are flocks of Bohemian Waxwings (свиристель). They don't breed here, but pass through in migration and sometimes winter in Moscow. The Atlas says the numbers vary greatly from year to year. They are beautiful too.
Hmm, Well, I found Царицыно (Царицынские пруды), and they don't have a nesting site listed there but they do have winter, spring, summer and fall sightings. I don't see Фили and I don't know where it is. The sites where they have good evidence of nesting are Лесопарк "Узкое", Терлецкий парк, Главный бот. сад РАН, и Нац. парк "Лосиный остров". Most of the non-nesting observations seem to be either near the outer edges of the city or near rivers. It says that outside the breeding season it varies from 'uncommon' to 'common', varying a lot from year to year. What I don't know is whether this is still "winter" or whether we are getting into the breeding season. The crows are starting to nest already. And the синицы are singing their breeding songs now. But they stay here all year. (I should add a userpic of me at the dacha bird-watching!) (Not now)
